Illumination - YoungArts Winner in Film

In the animated short film, Illumination, a burned out worker rediscovers his creativity.

  • Writing & Storyboarding

The first part of my filmmaking process is creating storyboards, which establish the narrative I’m interested in telling and how this narrative will translate to a visual medium. While storyboarding, I went through multiple different concepts for the story and revised, re-ordered, and redrew ideas for different shots until I composed a story that felt meaningful and resonant to me. During this process, I also design my characters, discover their internal struggles and motivations, and explore their character arcs.

  • Animating

After laying out my story, I start animating! I first create a rough animatic on Procreate establishing basic motion and pacing, then clean up my lines and add color and backgrounds. I will also sometimes edit some shots during this process to see how scenes will look in the final film.

  • Editing

After the long process of animating all of my shots, I compile them in After Effects and add lighting, transitions, color adjustments, and camera movements! I also add sound effects and music to bring my film to life. After editing, my work is ready to share with the world!
